TRACK CYCLING
by Scott Saifer | originally posted 11 January 2005

The track is a fun place to play for all riders, whether their goals are centuries, just staying fit or races. Swooping up and down the banking takes a lot of riders back to childhood when the distinction between bicycles and airplanes was less distinct. One gear and no brakes is just what you had on your tricycle.

The track is a particularly good place for racers who generally finish with the pack but not in the top places. When you race, you drive for hours, ride for 45 minutes or more and get to sprint once. By the time you race and sprint again, you've forgotten what you did wrong the previous time. On the track you drive for an hour, warm up for a bit, sprint, rest, sprint, rest, sprint rest... You get lot's of chances to correct your errors. You can try sprinting earlier or later, from the front or the back of the group, from a low speed or a high speed, in a big gear or a little one, all on the same day.
